France Household Consumption Rebounds

Household consumption of goods in France increased by 0.5% month-on-month in January 2026, exceeding market expectations of a 0.3% rise and following a downwardly revised 0.5% decline in December.

Spending on engineered goods rebounded (1.0% vs -0.8% in December), buoyed by higher purchases of durable goods (0.9% vs -0.9%), clothing and textiles (2.1% vs -1.8%), and other engineered items (0.4% vs -0.1%). Food consumption also recovered (0.6% vs -0.5%), supported by increased spending on both unprocessed agricultural products and processed agri-food products.

In contrast, energy expenditures fell by 0.8%, reversing a 0.3% increase in December, as consumption of unleaded petrol and diesel declined sharply. On a year-on-year basis, household spending rose 0.4% in January, following a downwardly revised 0.8% drop in December.
