South African Rand at Over 2-Month Low

The South African rand weakened toward 16.8 per USD, its lowest level since mid-December 2025, as investors trimmed exposure to emerging-market currencies amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The currency’s recent slide reflects a broader risk-off mood, with hopes for a swift resolution to the conflict fading.

Continued missile exchanges between the United States, Iran, and Israel have raised concerns that hostilities could be prolonged, leaving South Africa particularly vulnerable given its heavy dependence on imported oil and petroleum products from the region. Higher global oil and food prices, driven in part by rising shipping costs, are expected to intensify domestic inflationary pressures and could push inflation above the South African Reserve Bank’s 3% target.

In this context, the central bank is likely to adopt a more cautious stance on monetary policy and may opt to keep interest rates unchanged at its meeting later this month. Still, some analysts see a non-negligible risk of a 25-basis-point rate hike.
