German Imports Slump

Germany’s imports fell 5.9% month-on-month to a 17‑month low of €109.2 billion in January 2026, reversing a marginally revised 1.3% increase in December. The figures point to weakening domestic demand at the start of the year amid growing economic headwinds.

Imports from EU partners declined 4.8%, driven by lower purchases from both euro area members (-5.7%) and non-euro-area countries (-2.7%). In contrast, imports from non‑EU countries rose 1.0%, supported mainly by an 11.7% increase in imports from the United States.

Nevertheless, imports from several major trading partners contracted, including China (-13.2%), the United Kingdom (-2.6%), and Russia (-8.3%). On a year-on-year basis, total imports fell 4.0%, reversing the 4.4% growth recorded in 2025.
