Speculators Trim Bullish Bets on U.S. Crude Oil, CFTC Data Show

Speculative net long positions in U.S. crude oil futures declined in the latest reporting period, according to data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on 20 March 2026. Net speculative positions eased to 218.7K, down from 228.0K previously.

The reduction suggests that money managers and other speculative traders have slightly pared back their bullish exposure to crude, potentially reflecting increased caution over the near-term price outlook or changing risk appetite in energy markets. While positioning remains net long overall, the pullback indicates a modest cooling in speculative optimism toward U.S. oil futures.
