German Services Momentum Cools as HCOB PMI Slips to 50.9 in March

Germany’s services sector lost some momentum in March, as the HCOB Germany Services Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) eased to 50.9, down from 53.5 previously. The latest reading, covering March 2026 and updated on 07 April 2026, still indicates expansion but points to a slower pace of growth in the country’s key services industry.

The decline from 53.5 to 50.9 suggests that while activity continues to increase, demand and business conditions are no longer accelerating as strongly as in the prior month. With the PMI remaining just above the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction, the data signal a more cautious environment for service providers, potentially reflecting softer client demand, cost pressures, or increased uncertainty.

Investors and policymakers are likely to view the latest figure as a sign that the post-pandemic recovery in Germany’s services sector remains intact but is becoming more fragile. Future readings will be watched closely to determine whether this slowdown is temporary or the start of a more persistent moderation in services-driven growth.
