Finland Posts Largest Trade Deficit in 6 Months

Finland posted a trade deficit of EUR 0.66 billion in February 2026, a sharp increase from EUR 0.25 billion in the same month a year earlier, according to preliminary estimates. This was the largest deficit since August 2025 and reflected falling exports alongside rising imports.

Exports declined by 3.1% year-on-year to EUR 5.58 billion, driven by lower shipments to both EU countries (-1.8%) and non-EU countries (-4.9%). The steepest export declines were recorded in trade with the United States (-17.0%), the Netherlands (-24.5%), and Poland (-4.5%).

Imports, by contrast, rose 3.7% to EUR 6.24 billion. However, since January 2026, imports from EU countries have been compiled under a new methodology. As a result, only aggregate import values are directly comparable with 2025 data, and Finnish Customs will not publish other annual change figures for imports in 2026.

Over the first two months of 2026, Finland’s trade deficit widened to EUR 1.19 billion, more than doubling from EUR 0.52 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year.
