S&P 500, Nasdaq Snap Winning Streaks on US-Iran Tensions

US stocks finished Monday lower, as the S&P 500 slipped 0.2%, ending a five-session winning streak. The Nasdaq fell 0.3%, halting its 13-day rally, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was little changed, closing near flat at 49,442.

Sentiment was pressured by renewed geopolitical tensions after negotiations with Iran hit a setback. US President Trump said it was unlikely he would extend the current truce with Tehran if no agreement is reached before it expires this week, adding that the Strait of Hormuz would remain blocked until a deal is finalized. These developments helped push oil prices higher.

Sector performance was mixed. Communication services, utilities, and healthcare led the declines, while materials, financials, and energy advanced. Among major movers, Meta (-2.6%), Tesla (-2.0%), Alphabet (-1.2%), and Broadcom (-1.7%) posted notable losses. Apple (-1.0%) trimmed some of its earlier losses, and JPMorgan (+2.2%) finished the session higher.
