US Construction Spending Rises More than Anticipated

US construction spending increased by 0.4% month-over-month in April 2026, following a revised 0.2% gain in March and exceeding market expectations for a 0.2% rise. This was the second straight monthly increase.

Private construction outlays rose 0.4%, supported by a 0.8% advance in residential investment. Within residential, spending on single-family projects climbed 1.4%, more than offsetting a 0.3% decline in multifamily construction. In contrast, spending on private nonresidential structures, such as offices and factories, edged down 0.2%.

Public construction spending also grew by 0.4%, with increases in both residential (0.7%) and nonresidential (0.4%) segments. On an annual basis, total construction spending was up 0.9%.
