U.S. Refinery Utilization Growth Nearly Stalls, Slipping to 0.2% Week-Over-Week

The pace of U.S. refinery utilization growth slowed sharply in the latest reporting week, with the indicator easing to a 0.2% week-over-week change as of 3 June 2026, down from a 2.9% increase in the previous week. The data, released in the EIA’s weekly report, show that the strong ramp-up in refinery activity seen earlier has largely flattened out.

The figures compare changes in refinery utilization week-over-week, with the prior reading (2.9%) reflecting a much stronger expansion in operating rates versus the week before. The latest 0.2% change suggests refiners are now edging capacity higher only marginally, which could signal a more cautious operational stance amid evolving demand conditions or seasonal adjustments.

Investors and energy market participants will be watching upcoming EIA releases closely to assess whether this week’s near-plateau in utilization is a brief pause following a strong build-up, or the start of a more sustained moderation in U.S. refining activity.
