Retail sales in Romania declined by 6.3% year-on-year in April 2026, after a 3.8% drop in March, marking the ninth consecutive month of contraction and the sharpest fall since April 2020. Turnover from food, beverages, and tobacco continued to weaken, decreasing by 6.6% following a 3.5% decline in the previous month. Purchases of automotive fuel in specialised stores fell by 2.1%, reversing a 2.8% increase in March. Meanwhile, sales of non-food products remained subdued, dropping 7.9% for the second month in a row. On a monthly basis, retail activity fell by 2.6% in April, offsetting a 2.0% rise recorded in March.
