Baltic Dry Index Eases for 6th Day

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for vessels carrying dry bulk commodities, fell for the sixth straight session on Friday, losing 1.8% to 2,981 points, its lowest level since May 21. The capesize index, measuring earnings for ships that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, dropped 2.9% to 4,893 points. The panamax index, which reflects rates for vessels transporting about 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, slipped 18 points to 2,236 points. In contrast, the supramax index edged up 4 points to 1,588 points. Overall, the benchmark index declined 7.5% over the week.
