Romanian Industrial Output Falls to 3-Month Low

Romania’s industrial production declined by 3.1% year-on-year in April 2026, deepening from a downwardly revised 2.1% drop in March and reaching its lowest level since January. The deterioration was driven mainly by a sharper contraction in manufacturing output (-4.4% vs -3.2% in March), with notable weakness in the production of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations; other non-metallic mineral products; basic metals; electrical equipment; motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers; furniture; and other manufacturing segments.

Meanwhile, mining and quarrying activity also turned negative (-1.0% vs +1.3% previously), reflecting ongoing declines in coal and lignite mining, the extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas, and other mining and quarrying operations. Growth in the electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply sector moderated as well, easing to 3.4% from 4.6% in March.

On a monthly basis, however, industrial output increased by 1.5%, the strongest rise since April of the previous year, following an upwardly revised 0.4% gain in March.
