Retail sales in South Africa rose 1.3% year-on-year in April 2026, easing from a downwardly revised 2.5% increase in March. The main positive contributors were the “all other” retailers category (+7.3%), retailers of household furniture, appliances and equipment (+9.5%), and retailers of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (+2.3%). On a seasonally adjusted basis, monthly retail sales grew 0.9% in April, up from a 0.1% gain in the previous month. For the three months to April 2026, retail trade was 1.8% higher compared with the same period ending April 2025.
