US Retail Control Growth Accelerates in May, Signaling Firmer Consumer Spending

Retail control sales in the United States strengthened in May 2026, pointing to a firmer pulse in underlying consumer demand. The key gauge, which feeds directly into GDP calculations, rose 0.7% month-over-month, up from a 0.5% increase recorded in April 2026.

The data, updated on 17 June 2026, show that consumer spending momentum improved as the second quarter progressed. On a month-over-month comparison basis, May’s “actual” figure reflects a faster pace of growth than the “previous” period, when April’s 0.5% gain represented an increase over March. The pickup in retail control suggests that consumption is providing more support to overall economic activity heading into the middle of the year.
