France Current Account Narrows

France’s current account deficit narrowed to a seasonally adjusted €100 million in May 2026, down from a revised €600 million in April, reaching its smallest level in four months. The services surplus widened significantly, rising to €6.4 billion from €4.6 billion, driven by a €1 billion increase in exports of professional and management consulting, research and development, and technical services, which climbed to €1.8 billion. By contrast, the goods deficit widened to €5.5 billion from €4 billion, as the non-energy trade balance shifted to a deficit of €1.3 billion from a surplus of €0.6 billion. The energy goods account remained deeply in deficit at €4.2 billion, with the conflict in the Middle East keeping fuel import prices elevated.
