U.S. Distillate Inventories Rise for a Second Week, But Build Slows Sharply

U.S. distillate fuel inventories continued to rise in the latest reporting week, but at a significantly slower pace than before, according to the EIA data updated on 22 July 2026. Distillate stocks increased by 1.395 million barrels, down markedly from the previous build of 4.556 million barrels.

The sharp deceleration in the weekly stock build may signal a shift in the balance between supply and demand for distillate fuels, which include diesel and heating oil. While inventories are still moving higher, the smaller increase could ease some concerns about oversupply that may have arisen after the stronger prior reading.

Traders and analysts will be watching upcoming EIA releases to see whether this smaller build marks the start of a trend toward more balanced distillate markets in the United States, or simply a temporary pullback following an unusually strong inventory increase in the previous week.
