UK Consumer Confidence Improves in July

The UK GfK Consumer Confidence Index rose to -17 in July 2026, beating market expectations of -21 and improving from -23 in June. This reading was the highest since January and represented the largest monthly gain since November 2023. Sentiment was buoyed by optimism following Andy Burnham’s appointment as prime minister, hopes for easing tensions in the Middle East at the start of the month, and a lift from both the summer weather and the FIFA World Cup.

Households’ view of the economy over the past 12 months improved by 10 points to -39, the strongest level since late 2024. Expectations for the coming year rose by 8 points to -28, the highest since October 2024. Intentions to make major purchases also strengthened, climbing 8 points to -12, the best reading so far this year. However, the survey was conducted before the latest flare‑up in the Middle East, which could dampen confidence in the months ahead.
