Thailand Trade Gap Above Estimates as Imports Surge

Thailand recorded a trade deficit of USD 6.53 billion in June 2026, swinging from a surplus of USD 1.06 billion in the same month a year earlier. This marked the ninth consecutive month of deficit and exceeded market expectations for a USD 4.0 billion shortfall, as import growth far outpaced that of exports.

Imports jumped 50.3% year-on-year, a sharp acceleration from May’s 35.1% increase and well above the consensus forecast of 35.8%. The surge was underpinned by ongoing government stimulus measures designed to bolster consumption and investment. Exports also strengthened, rising 20.8% year-on-year after a 10.6% increase in May and beating market projections of 15.2%.
