Mexico Fixed Investment Growth Slows in May

Mexico’s gross fixed investment increased by 1.1% year-on-year in May 2026, following a 5.9% rise in April and marking a second consecutive month of expansion. The result exceeded market expectations of a 0.3% gain.

Construction investment grew by 2.7%, driven by a 12.4% surge in non-residential building, which more than offset a 4.7% decline in residential construction.

By contrast, investment in machinery and equipment decreased by 0.7%. A steep drop in domestically produced capital goods—both transport equipment (-8.5%) and other machinery (-11.1%)—more than outweighed higher imports of transport equipment (5.1%) and other machinery (5.7%).

Overall investment growth was underpinned by a 19.7% increase in public investment, which offset a 1.3% contraction in private investment.

On a month-on-month basis, gross fixed investment declined by 0.4%, reversing the 4.0% increase recorded in April.
