Baltic Dry Index Breaks 5-Day Advance

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships transporting dry bulk commodities, ended a five-session winning streak on Thursday, edging down about 0.2% to 3,057 points. The capesize index, reflecting earnings for vessels that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, also broke a five-day advance, slipping 0.8% to 5,052 points. The supramax index fell by 4 points, or 0.3%, to 1,608 points. In contrast, the panamax index, which measures rates for vessels hauling roughly 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, climbed 1.7% to 2,275 points, its highest level since June 15.
