US Mortgage Rates Break Five-Week Rising Streak

The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage in the US slipped to 6.67% as of August 13, 2026, down from 6.69% a week earlier, breaking a run of five straight weekly increases. Freddie Mac Chief Economist Sam Khater noted that mortgage rates have held relatively steady, and that better housing affordability, together with recent gains in both purchase and refinance applications, indicates borrowers remain sensitive to even modest rate movements. One year earlier, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate averaged 6.58%. Over the same period, the average rate on a 15-year fixed mortgage declined to 5.96% from 6.01% the previous week.
