Australia Employment Unexpectedly Falls

Employment in Australia fell by 15,800 to 14.81 million in July 2026, reversing an upwardly revised increase of 80,300 in June and undershooting market expectations for a 15,000 rise. This was the first monthly decline since April and was driven by a 32,200 drop in part-time employment, which fell to a three-month low of 4.60 million. In contrast, full-time employment increased by 16,300, reaching a record high of 10.21 million. The employment-to-population ratio edged down to 63.9% from 64.1%, the first decline in three months, while the participation rate eased to 66.9% from 67.1%. On an annual basis, total employment was up by 191,900, or 1.3%.
