Baltic Dry Index Rebounds

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, broke a two-day losing streak on Thursday, edging up about 0.5% to 2,791 points. The capesize index, reflecting earnings for ships that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, rose 1.2% to 4,429 points, while the supramax index added 0.2% to reach 1,637 points, its highest level since July 28. In contrast, the panamax index, which measures rates for vessels hauling about 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, slipped 1% to 2,088 points, its lowest reading since July 31.
