Mexico Current Account Swings to Surplus in 2Q

Mexico’s current account recorded a surplus of $8.93 billion in the second quarter of 2026, a sharp turnaround from the $4.46 billion deficit registered in the same period a year earlier. This improvement was driven by a $6.35 billion surplus in the goods and services balance, a $15.82 billion surplus in the secondary income balance, and was partly offset by a $13.25 billion deficit in the primary income balance.

The surplus in the goods and services balance primarily reflected a $10.82 billion surplus in the goods balance, which more than compensated for a $4.46 billion deficit in the services balance. In terms of economic output, the current account surplus amounted to 1.7% of GDP in the second quarter of 2026, compared with a current account deficit of 1.0% of GDP in the same quarter of 2025.
