US Mortgage Rates Edge Higher

The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage in the U.S. was 6.66% as of August 27, 2026, edging up from 6.65% the previous week. “Mortgage rates changed little this week, averaging 6.66%,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist.

The broader economy remains resilient, buoyed by steady consumer spending and rising household incomes. At the same time, increased housing supply and slower home price growth in many markets are giving buyers more choices and contributing to a more balanced housing market.

A year earlier, the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage stood at 6.56%. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.98% in the latest week, up from 5.95% the week before.
