Japanese Shares Track Wall Street Higher

The Nikkei 225 Index climbed 0.4% to above 66,300 on Friday, while the broader Topix Index advanced 1% to 4,160, recouping losses from the previous session. The rebound followed a strong lead from Wall Street after Nvidia’s upbeat sales forecast further bolstered the outlook for artificial intelligence–driven demand.

Investors also looked ahead to Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at Jackson Hole for signals on the future path of US interest rates.

In Japan, fresh data showed the unemployment rate declined to 2.4% in July, its lowest level in a year, while Tokyo’s inflation rate accelerated in August to a five-month high.

On the corporate front, notable gainers included Advantest (up 1.4%), Taiyo Yuden (2.2%), and Tokyo Electron (1.1%). In other company news, Mizuho Bank has filed a lawsuit against Radiant World in Singapore’s Supreme Court, amid allegations that the iron ore trader submitted falsified documents to banks in order to secure financing.
