NZX 50 Edges Lower, Extends Losses

New Zealand shares slipped 27 points, or 0.2%, to 13,916 in early Tuesday trading, extending the previous session’s losses, with financials, materials, technology, and utilities leading the decline. Sentiment was cautious ahead of the release of China’s trade figures later today—critical for New Zealand given China is its largest trading partner—as well as CPI and PPI data due later in the week.

Rising oil prices added further pressure amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, stoking inflation fears and reinforcing expectations that central banks may raise interest rates. The downside was limited somewhat by a Moody’s report noting that New Zealand’s economic recovery is underway, though it cautioned that several structural challenges remain unresolved.

Early decliners included Summerset Group (-1.2%), Fletcher Building (-0.8%), ANZ Group (-0.7%), Vulcan Steel (-0.7%), Infratil (-0.5%), and Auckland International Airport (-0.5%).
