Offshore Yuan Remains at Over 3-Year High

The offshore yuan traded around 6.70 per dollar on Wednesday, holding at its strongest level since January 2023 as investors increasingly adopt the currency as a funding vehicle for carry trades. The recent surge in the yen has prompted market participants to seek alternatives such as the yuan, supported by China’s relatively low interest rates and the currency’s perceived stability.

While major central banks are under pressure to keep interest rates elevated or tighten policy further, China’s comparatively low borrowing costs enable investors to finance higher-yielding assets at a lower expense.

On the macroeconomic front, annual consumer inflation rose to 0.8% in August, in line with forecasts and up from a six-month low of 0.5% in July. Producer price inflation also accelerated to 3.8% from a three-month low of 3.5%, surpassing market expectations of 3.7%. The uptick in price pressures was driven primarily by higher energy costs amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
