Baltic Dry Index Breaks 2-Day Advance

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which measures rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, ended a two-day advance on Thursday, falling about 2.7% to a one-week low of 3,521 points. The decline was driven by weaker rates in the larger vessel segments. The capesize index, covering ships that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, also snapped a two-day rally, dropping 4.3% to 6,122 points. The panamax index, which reflects rates for vessels transporting about 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, edged down 0.2% to 2,409 points. In contrast, the supramax index rose 0.5% to 1,713 points.
