Romania Current Account Deficit Widens to Record High

Romania’s current account deficit widened sharply to EUR 3.14 billion in July 2026, up from EUR 2.15 billion in the same month a year earlier. This was the largest monthly deficit on record. The goods account deficit grew to EUR 2.80 billion from EUR 2.68 billion, while the primary income deficit increased to EUR 1.20 billion from EUR 1.0 billion. In addition, the secondary income account swung to a deficit of EUR 0.12 billion, after recording a surplus of EUR 0.54 billion a year before. By contrast, the services account surplus edged up slightly to EUR 0.99 billion from EUR 0.98 billion. Over the January–July period, the current account deficit reached EUR 16.29 billion, compared with EUR 15.71 billion in the same period last year.
