Finnish Consumer Morale Weakens in September

Finland’s consumer confidence indicator fell to -4.9 in September 2026, down from -3.0 in August, when it had reached its highest level since February 2022. Despite this earlier improvement, the latest figure remains below the long-term average of -2.9.

The decline was driven primarily by mounting pessimism about the broader economy, with consumers increasingly expecting a sharp weakening over the next 12 months (-4.7 vs -2.4 in August). At the same time, their view of their current personal financial situation turned negative (-1.9 vs 0.1), and confidence in their own finances over the coming year also worsened (5.8 vs 8.1).

Consumers continued to consider the timing for major purchases, such as durable goods, as clearly unfavorable (-13.0 vs -12.7), and their overall spending intentions weakened further (-18.7 vs -17.8). By contrast, the intention to save improved, though it remained in negative territory (-4.6 vs -6.6).

Expectations regarding unemployment became slightly less pessimistic (-14.6 vs -14.9), while inflation expectations eased marginally, with the anticipated rate over the next 12 months slipping to 4.1% from 4.2% in August.
