Sensex Holds Near 6-Month Low as Oil Climbs

India’s BSE Sensex fell about 0.8% to 72,189 on Tuesday, its lowest level since late March, extending the previous session’s losses and hovering near a six‑month low. The decline was led by rising oil prices, with persistent foreign portfolio outflows and elevated US Treasury yields further dampening sentiment.

Brent crude climbed roughly 1.5% to above $107 a barrel, heightening concerns about India’s import bill, inflation, and corporate profit margins, given the economy’s heavy dependence on imported oil. The rupee also weakened beyond 96 per US dollar, adding pressure on equities as costlier crude threatens to widen the trade deficit and fuel imported inflation.

The market weakness came despite stronger-than-expected macroeconomic data. Industrial output grew 8% year-on-year in August, beating the 6.5% consensus forecast and accelerating from July’s 7.4%. Manufacturing output also picked up, rising 9% compared with 8.2% previously.

Among notable decliners were Honasa Consumer (-2.8%), HDFC Bank (-1.5%), State Bank of India (-0.7%), Reliance Industries (-1.1%), and PB Fintech (-3.5%).
