Eurozone Consumer Confidence Worsens in September

Consumer confidence in the Euro Area fell to -16.5 in September 2026, down from a six-month high of -15.5 in August, confirming the preliminary estimate. This decline brought an end to a four-month run of improving sentiment, as elevated energy prices—linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East—intensified concerns about inflation and the future path of interest rates. The deterioration was broad-based, with all four components weakening: assessments of households’ past and expected financial situation, expectations for the domestic economic outlook, and intentions to make major purchases all declined. Confidence also softened across the European Union as a whole, with the index slipping to -15.8 in September from -15.0 in August.
