The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which measures shipping rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, fell for a fifth consecutive session on Friday, declining about 2.2% to 3,002 points, its lowest level since August 25. The capesize index, tracking ships that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, dropped 4% to 4,638 points, the weakest reading since August 21. In contrast, the panamax index, covering vessels that usually transport 60,000–70,000 tons of coal or grain, inched up 0.1% to 2,366 points, while the supramax index added 0.3% to reach 1,795 points. Over the week, the benchmark index fell by more than 7%.
