German Wholesale Prices Accelerate in September, Signaling Building Inflation Pressures

Germany’s Wholesale Price Index (WPI) rose by 1.9% month-on-month in September 2026, up from a 0.9% increase in August, according to data updated on 14 October 2026. The figures indicate a marked acceleration in price growth at the wholesale level, suggesting rising cost pressures working their way through the supply chain.

On a month-over-month basis, the September reading shows that wholesale prices are increasing at more than double the pace seen in the previous month. In August 2026, the WPI had advanced by 0.9% compared with July, but the latest data point to a stronger upward momentum.

The Wholesale Price Index is closely watched by markets and policymakers as an early indicator of potential future consumer inflation. The sharper rise in September may heighten attention on input costs for German businesses and their potential impact on final prices in the coming months.
