Chinese New Yuan Loans Slow as Expected

Chinese banks extended a net CNY 1,080 billion in new yuan loans in September 2026, down from CNY 1,290 billion in the same month a year earlier and broadly in line with market expectations of a CNY 975 billion increase. The figures confirm the ongoing sharp contraction in bank lending to households and businesses, reflecting a slowing economy and subdued consumer demand, especially in the housing market.

By contrast, total social financing (TSF)—a broader gauge of overall credit in the financial system—rose by CNY 3,550 billion, compared with CNY 3,530 billion a year earlier and above the consensus forecast of CNY 3,270 billion. This pattern highlights a continued shift in financing away from traditional parts of the economy toward technology-related sectors, which more often tap bond markets rather than relying on conventional bank loans.
