Baltic Dry Index Down for 8th Day

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which measures shipping rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, fell for the eighth consecutive session on Wednesday, declining about 4.8% to 2,667 points—its lowest level since July 29. The capesize index, reflecting rates for vessels that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, slumped 9.1% to 3,630 points, its weakest reading since late June. Meanwhile, the panamax index, which tracks ships that usually transport 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, slipped around 1% to 2,409 points. In contrast, the supramax index, covering smaller vessels, edged up 0.7% to 1,845 points.
