Spain Trade Gap Widens in August

Spain’s trade deficit widened to €7.81 billion in August 2026, up from €5.98 billion in the same month a year earlier. Imports surged 16.7% year-on-year to €35.4 billion, largely driven by a 41.9% increase in purchases of energy products, including oil and derivatives. There were also strong gains in imports of raw materials (+38.3%), automobiles (+14.7%), chemical products (+14.3%) and consumer manufactures (+12.1%).

Exports rose 13.3% to €27.6 billion, supported chiefly by a 79.3% jump in energy-product shipments. Exports of raw materials (+42.7%), chemical products (+14.6%) and consumer manufactures (+11.8%) also recorded substantial growth.
