Indonesian Shares Retreat Ahead of BI Rate Call

Indonesian equities dropped 84 points, or 1.6%, to 5,197 on Wednesday morning, erasing earlier gains that followed new regulatory steps aimed at restoring investor confidence. The measures included adjustments to stocks with highly concentrated ownership and enhanced disclosure requirements for shareholder affiliations.

Sentiment turned cautious ahead of Bank Indonesia’s policy decision later in the day. The central bank is widely expected to keep its benchmark rate unchanged for a fourth consecutive month, but scope for further easing remains limited after a cumulative 100-basis-point hike in May and June.

Losses were partially contained by record foreign direct investment in Q3 2026, underpinned by strong inflows into the base metal sector. Externally, China—Indonesia’s key trading partner—left its benchmark lending rates steady for a 17th straight month, following stronger-than-expected Q3 GDP data.

Sector-wise, cyclicals, basic materials, and financials led the declines, while infrastructure, non-cyclicals, and transport provided some support. Among notable losers were Solusi Energi Digital (-6.9%), Mitra Adiperkasa (-6.0%), and Medco Energi (-3.9%).
