Platinum Sinks to 11-Month Low

Platinum futures fell below $1,560 an ounce, their lowest level since November 2025, as a liquidity-driven selloff swept through precious metals during a broader stock market rout. Mounting doubts over the durability of AI-related investment sparked a steep decline in US equities and a rally in Treasuries, forcing investors to liquidate gold and other highly liquid assets to meet margin calls and cover losses elsewhere. Rising oil prices amid the intensifying conflict in the Middle East added further pressure by fueling inflation concerns and reinforcing expectations that interest rates may stay higher for longer, diminishing the appeal of non-yielding metals. Platinum is also contending with fundamental headwinds: the World Platinum Investment Council projects a market surplus of 265,000 ounces in 2026, as weaker investment flows and softer jewelry demand darken the outlook. Automotive demand is forecast to fall 4%, partly offset by an anticipated 5% increase in industrial demand.
