Hong Kong Retail Sales Growth Accelerates

Hong Kong’s retail sales volume rose 3.9% year-on-year in September 2026, up from 2.9% in August and marking the fastest pace of growth since May. The improvement was driven primarily by a strong rebound in sales of clothing, footwear and allied products (up 10.9% vs 0.4% in August), other consumer goods (8.2% vs 6.3%), and jewellery, watches and clocks, and valuable gifts (7.0% vs -1.3%).

Sales also picked up in food, alcoholic drinks and tobacco (5.1% vs 1.6%) and in consumer durable goods (1.7% vs 13.2%). At the same time, the contraction in fuel sales moderated (-18.5% vs -24.2%), and supermarket sales showed a smaller decline (-1.4% vs -1.5%), while the drop in department store sales deepened (-3.8% vs -2.6%). Combined sales at supermarkets and the supermarket sections of department stores fell 2.2%, reversing a 2.6% rise in August.

On a month-on-month basis, retail sales increased 3.7% in September, following a 3% gain in August.
