Irish Consumer Sentiment Edges Higher in October

Ireland’s Credit Union Consumer Sentiment Index edged up to 61.6 in October 2026 from 61.1 in September, despite persistent headwinds from higher inflation, rising energy prices and public sector industrial action. The index has now recorded only modest month‑to‑month movements within a tight band since the outbreak of the US–Iran war, underscoring that overall consumer confidence remains weak.

Respondents reported a more downbeat view of the Irish economic outlook and a slightly more negative assessment of their own household finances. However, these setbacks were broadly offset by a greater readiness to spend and a modest easing of anxiety around job security.

The survey also highlighted widespread expectations that household living costs will outstrip income growth in 2027. Concerns about further cost‑of‑living pressures were especially pronounced among older consumers, financially stretched households and those living outside Dublin. The report further indicated that energy costs are likely to pose a particularly heavy burden for financially vulnerable and rural households.
