Five places that can disappear from planet
Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)
The unique ice shell on the peak of this amazing mountain is steadily melting. In the nearest future, Kilimanjaro may lose its ice cover. Over the last century, the area of the glacier has decreased by more than 85%. Nowadays, this process has become catastrophic. Environmental experts warn that this glacier may disappear in 20 years.
The Dead Sea (Israel)
The amazing water formation is located in the deepest cavity in the world. However, with every passing year, the sea subsides lower and lower. The speed of this process is 1 meter per year. According to experts, the reasons for it are a weak flow of water from the Jordan River as well as the active use of water for agricultural and industrial needs. In several decades, the Dead Sea has shrunk by one third, ecologists say.
Tuvalu island country
This tiny island country with a population of merely 10 thousand people may also cease to exist. It is located in the Pacific Ocean near Australia. The government of Tuvalu asked the Australian authorities to provide shelter to all residents in case of a possible evacuation. During tropical storms, huge waves flood the island almost completely. As a result, the population loses the few remaining sources of fresh water. The UN forecasts that Tuvalu will be entirely covered by water by 2050.
Venice (Italy)
Nowadays, this Italian city is flooded occasionally. At least five times a year, Piazza San Marco, the main square of Venice, becomes hidden under water. Environmental experts fear that the situation may deteriorate. According to researchers, Venice submerges at a speed of 2 mm per year. It is happening because the level of the Adriatic Sea rises, and Venetian buildings subside gradually.
The Maldives
The rising sea level puts a serious threat to the Maldives. The archipelago is slightly elevated above the water surface. The highest point of the Maldives is no more than 2.5 m above sea level. In 2004, a large tsunami with the epicenter of three thousand kilometers away from the Maldives caused irreparable damage to the territory. A lot of coral atolls submerged completely. Now it is crucial for residents of the Maldives to stop the destruction of coral reefs. They are natural wave cutters that prevent the islands from sinking to the bottom of the ocean.
