Carter served during the time of high interest rates and inflation in the US. As a result, he lost out to Republican President Ronald Reagan.

Those events were against the president. Therefore, Ford lost the election to Democrat Jimmy Carter.

In response, Roosevelt created the Progressive Party and became its presidential nominee. The result was unexpected. Both Roosevelt and Taft lost to Democrat Woodrow Wilson who became the next US president.
