At the beginning of April, a new coronavirus wave was officially announced in India. For several weeks, the number of new infections (around 300,000 people a day) was at record highs. Recently, the country reported on almost 270,000 new virus cases.

On May 18, India registered its biggest one-day coronavirus death toll of 4,300 people. In the following two days (May 19-20), the number of deaths had been increasing, exceeding 4,500 a day. The overall number of infections in India has already approached 25.5 million.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi frankly admitted that the country was not ready for such a devastating second coronavirus wave. He emphasized that India was proud to cope with the first outbreak. The country did not expect such a terrible scenario during the second wave.

On May 17, tropical cyclone Tauktae made landfall in India. This significantly complicated the battle against the virus. Most people and organizations suffered a widespread power outage. Approximately 19 people died. Most citizens were evacuated to safe regions.

A new Indian strain of Covid-19 is actively discussed on the Net. Judging by the current situation in India, most scientists suppose that this virus strain is much more contagious and powerful than the previous ones.

UK experts presume that the Indian strain of Covid-19 passes from one person to another faster than the British one. The Daily Telegraph supposes that it may cause the third coronavirus wave in the UK.

At the same time, Russian scientists think that the Indian strain will hardly lead to a serious outbreak in the country as most Russians have already had Covid-19.
