Fort Galle
One of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka is Fort Galle, which is located on the territory of the city of the same name. This structure seamlessly combines European architectural style and national exoticism. Fort Galle was built by the Portuguese, and later, the Dutch and the British contributed to its architecture. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is recognized as the best example of a fortified city. Fort Galle is 6 km from the popular Unawatuna Beach and 22 km from Hikkaduwa Beach. The lighthouse installed in 1938 on the Utrecht Bastion is an important landmark in Galle.
Nine Arch Bridge
The famous Nine Arch Bridge (also known as the Bridge in the Sky) is spread out in the mountainous area between the railway stations of Ella and Demodara. This structure was erected in 1921. It takes 10 minutes to drive from Ella to the bridge, and then you should walk a bit. The uniqueness of the Nine Arch Bridge is its location. In addition, no metal was used in the construction of the bridge. The Nine Arch Bridge is a marvel of engineering and is still functioning properly.
Nuwara Eliya
Ceylon tea, famous all over the world, grows in Sri Lanka. Notably, until the early 1970s, Europeans called this island Ceylon. The history of the popular tea is unusual. The British brought it from China, and in the early 19th century, tea bushes were planted in the Royal Botanical Garden in the Ceylon suburb of Kandy. Later, in the 1860s, the first tea plantation was established here. At present, the maximum number of plantations and factories are concentrated near Nuwara Eliya. Located 250 km from the beaches of Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa, this area can be reached by bus, train, or car. Tours and tea tastings are also available at Nuwara Eliya.
Adam's Peak and Little Adam's Peak
The next important landmarks are the sacred mountain of Adam's Peak, which is 2,243 meters high, and Little Adam's Peak, which is 1,140 meters high. To meet the sunrise on the mountain tops, travelers start to climb there at around 2 a.m. According to experts, the most popular route to Adam's Peak starts at Nallatannia (70 km from Nuwara Eliya). There is also a special trail from Sri Palabaddala (75 km from Nuwara Eliya) for this purpose. To climb Little Adam's Peak, one has to reach a point marked on maps as Little Adam's Peak Trailhead (55 km from Nuwara Eliya and 3.5 km from Ella).
Sigiriya
The unusual rock plateau of Sigiriya invariably attracts tourists. Its height is 370 meters above sea level and 170 meters above the dense jungle surrounding the rock. At the top of Sigiriya, there is an impregnable fortress built in the 5th century. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This area is 270 km from the popular Hikkaduwa beach.
Ambuluwawa Tower
The Ambuluwawa Tower is an amazing landmark in Sri Lanka. It was erected from 1997 to 2006. The height of Ambuluwawa is 54.55 meters, and its peak is at an altitude of 3,567 meters above sea level. This structure is a multi-religious center. It offers an unforgettable panoramic view of mountains, forests, rivers, and urban settlements. A macaque monkey guards the entrance to the Ambuluwawa Tower. This structure is located 25 km from Kandy and 65 km from Nuwara Eliya.
Ramboda Waterfall
The Ramboda Waterfall closes the list of the top seven attractions in Sri Lanka. It should be noted that there are a huge number of waterfalls in this Asian country, and Ramboda is one of the most beautiful. In addition, it is quite easy to get to it. It is located 25 kilometers from Nuwara Eliya. Experts consider this waterfall to be the most suitable for tourists. There are several hotels near it, and it offers a stunning view of the river, valley, and mountains.
