FX.co ★ US new, futuristic destroyer Zumwalt finally at sea

December 8, the Navy’s futuristic destroyer USS Zumwalt traveled down the Kennebec River in Maine for sea trials.

The combat ship was built at the Bath Iron Works shipyard. The vessel cost more than $4 billion to design and build.

The destroyer is 183 meters long, its displacement is 15,000 tons.

It is also eqipped with gas-turbine engines power generators, radar, sonar, missiles, and powerful guns.

The multimission vessel is maneuvering toward the Atlantic Ocean escorted by six patrol ships.

Zumwalt has an unconventional pyramid-shaped hull that slopes out at the bottom with a stealthy “tumblehome” design, rather than sloping in like most warships. That should make it harder to find on radar.

Another advantage of the destroyer is the cutting-edge all-electric power design, that does not require a big crew.
