The night sky is becoming about 10 percent brighter each year, a sign that artificial light pollution is rapidly changing what people — and wildlife — experience after dark. About 80 percent of people now live under light-polluted skies. Streetlights, buildings, parking lots, and sports facilities are major contributors, while the growing number of bright satellites is adding a new source of glare overhead. Some communities, including Flagstaff, Arizona, have tried to curb the problem with rules limiting how bright outdoor lights can be, where they point, and what types of bulbs can be used.
