Brazilian Consumers Less Pessimistic in March

In March 2025, the seasonally adjusted FGV-IBRE Consumer Confidence Index in Brazil experienced a modest rise, increasing by 0.7 points to settle at 84.3 points. This uptick follows three consecutive declines that previously brought the index to its lowest point in more than two years. The improvement was primarily attributed to a 1.6-point boost in the current situation index, which climbed to 81.0, while the expectations index remained relatively unchanged, inching up by a mere 0.1 point to 87.4. Economist Anna Carolina Gouveia from FGV IBRE commented that the slight increase in consumer confidence for March reflects an adjustment in the metric, though it continues to linger in the pessimistic zone. This positive shift for the month was propelled by an enhanced perception of the current situation, specifically among consumers in the highest income bracket. Meanwhile, confidence among consumers in other income groups continued to decline, underscoring the financial strain caused by food inflation and rising interest rates, which are exacerbating families' economic conditions.
