Japan Gets First Consideration in U.S. Tariff Talks

Japan is poised to be given precedence in the upcoming U.S. tariff negotiations, placing Tokyo ahead of other countries seeking exemptions from President Trump's reciprocal tariffs, which are scheduled to commence on April 9. According to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in a recent interview, Japan is expected to be expedited through the process due to its proactive engagement. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has convened a cabinet meeting to discuss the tariff situation, highlighting concerns over the potential repercussions on Japan’s critical automotive sector. This meeting followed a conversation on April 7 between Trump and Ishiba, during which Ishiba expressed apprehension that the tariffs could undermine Japanese companies' capacity to invest in the United States. Tokyo is currently facing a 24% reciprocal tariff and an additional 25% duty specifically targeting automobiles.
